Internships at OTR Community Housing

Program Description

OTR Community Housing interns have been part of executing construction projects, writing grant applications, green space/ community gardening, painting murals, fundraising committees, and education.

Internships range from 3 to 6 month commitment which is negotiated on an individual level. OTR Community Housing requires 15 hours of work weekly, including 6 hours for Saturday work crews. The other hours are dedicated to the interns individual work plan. Each work plan is developed utilizing the intern's interests and talents; and the organizations needs.

In exchange OTR Community Housing provides all utilities paid free housing. There are no restrictions on interns having other jobs as long as they do not interfere with the internship commitment. Generally, interns also attend school and/or work part-time jobs during the internship.

Program Goals and Objectives

The main goal of the Intern program is fulfill OTR Community Housing' objective of education and advocacy while providing additional staff capacity for the organization. The Intern program provides a unique experience for college age individuals to become acquainted with the Over-the-Rhine community; work with a non-profit organization; and utilize and expand on individual skills.

The interns provide staff support in a variety of ways:

Generally, interns take on projects that compliment a specific organizational need and the skills/interest of the individual intern.

Potential interns will be recruited through already established volunteer connections at local churches, colleges and high schools. When recruiting at high schools, only 18 year olds (primarily exiting seniors) are allowed to apply. Word of mouth recruitment is encouraged, because we are looking for individuals who are responsible and reliable.

Potential interns must go through the general interview process to apply for the position. If the intern is accepted s/he must sign the intern contract to be part of the program.
